“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love.” — Rumi

It took me a long time to get the hang of being in a state of love. Not the romantic kind, but the kind Rumi is talking about.

I think you can get a sense of it by imagining what it feels like to be totally in love with someone and to feel their love in return. Feel perfect, special, chosen, desired, and loved—because you are.

Allow the gratitude and joy that come with those feelings to fill you. Now, notice that you’re experiencing all of this without another person.

I believe this is the place we’re meant to live from, rather than hoping someone else will give these feelings to us.

So, I’d invite you to just sit with it for a while, all by yourself.  That’s what I did a few days ago.

If you're like me, your brain will soon interrupt to tell you to do something.

So I asked mine why I needed to do this other thing.

It told me I needed to do it in order to be happy, even though the doing itself wasn't going to be pleasant. It was all for the promise of future happiness.

So I paused—which, in itself, was a milestone for me—and asked myself: Why would I stop feeling all this love and joy to do something that might bring me happiness later?

I sat for an hour, doing nothing but feeling love and joy as I watched the beautiful daybreak. Then I tried to carry that feeling with me into the rest of my day.
